On August 8, 2024, the community of kaMhlushwa gathered for a heart-warming occasion—the official handover of a new home to Gogo Gladys Nana Shongwe. The event, organized by Laduma Hardware Tonga, marked a significant milestone for Gogo Shongwe, who had spent years living in a shack with her elderly mother.
The ceremony was a joyous affair, attended by many members of the kaMhlushwa community, including Elders in the community, Pastor Zephaniah Mtshali—who played a key role in identifying the Shongwe family’s need—members of the South African Police Service, Ward Councillor Solomon Mahlalela, guests from India, educators from Inkomazi Secondary School, and children from the neighbourhood.
The day was filled with spontaneous dancing and exciting fun activities, led by the vibrant Programme Director, a staff member of Tonga Laduma Hardware; Ms. Thulile Mathabela. Store Manager, Mr. Vijay Chandran M.D, popularly known as Vijay and Marketing Manager, Ms. Pholiswa Zonke, frequently led the crowd into dance backed by Laduma’s very own Gumba Gumba. The program featured mini competitions, Question & Answer sessions, Information Session by the Credit Consultant on how to buy on Credit at Laduma Hardware. The programme also featured the distribution of gift hampers, including caps, T-shirts, and water bottles to those who dared to go an extra mile and participated in the festivities of the day.
Pastor Mtshali, in his speech, emphasized his close work with communities and how he identified the Shongwe family’s need after being approached by Vijay for help. He praised Laduma Hardware for its generosity, noting that the company gives back to the community rather than just taking from the community. Ms. Sibongile Mpapane, an educator from Inkomazi Secondary School, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for Laduma Hardware’s role in restoring the school to its former glory. She also encouraged the company to expand its reach internationally, starting with eSwatini and Mozambique.
Ward Councillor Mr. Solomon Mahlalela highlighted Laduma Hardware’s significant contribution to kaMhlushwa, urging the company’s Executive Management to consider building a new store in the area. He noted that no competitors had matched Laduma Hardware’s community impact and that the kaMhlushwa community was deeply touched by the company’s efforts to improve their lives.
Gogo Gladys Nana Shongwe, overwhelmed with emotion, struggled to find words as tears of joy streamed down her face. She expressed her heartfelt thanks to Pastor Mtshali, Laduma Hardware Tonga, her neighbours, and the builder, Mr. Sambo and his team who made her dream of owning a home a reality. As she danced to the tune of “Basheshe Bahleka” by Donny, she paraded joyfully to Area Manager Mr. Imtiaz Patel, who, along with key invited guests, cut the ribbon to her new home.
The joint ribbon-cutting symbolized the power of unity and the achievements that can be realized when a community works together and cares for one another. The keys to the new home were handed over to a grateful and emotional Gogo Shongwe, marking a significant change in her life.
As the community celebrated, it was evident that this gesture would leave a lasting impact, not only on Gogo Shongwe and her mother but on the entire kaMhlushwa community. The event served as a reminder of the importance of caring for those in need, as community members generously contributed money from their wallets to making the house a true home for the Shongwe family.
Once again, Laduma Hardware Tonga has made an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the people of kaMhlushwa, inspiring other businesses to join hands in contributing towards the socio-economic development of South Africa in small but meaningful ways.
